Is detoxing really the fresh start you need?

Most of us are back at work now and attempting to curb the indulgences of the holiday season. Manufacturers of many popular detox products know this fact, and you have probably noticed the plethora of advertising for many cleansing, detoxing, and general weight-loss programs around this time of year.

However, detoxing is NOT something to be taken lightly. When the body is already compromised from a few weeks of poor food, too much alcohol, and improper sleeping patterns, the organs are in distress, and the last thing they need in that condition is the further trauma and stress of being put through a detox. Traditional cultures went through intense physical and spiritual preparation before fasting or cleansing, as they knew the dangers of further depleting an unprepared system. As Sally Fallon, Author of Nourishing Traditions says “The body temple may benefit from the occasional application of mops and brooms – broths and vegetable preparations – but this magnificent edifice is built strong and kept in good repair with bricks and mortar – nutrient-dense proteins and fats.”

If you are feeling weakened from the too many cheeky treats and late nights of recent months, instead of jumping into a harsh detox program, focus your diet around whole foods containing plenty of nourishing, pasture-raised animal products, liberal vegetables, some fruits, properly prepared legumes, and traditional fats such as good quality coconut oil.
