Your coach will reach out. Wear gym clothes with sleeves, bring a towel and water, and arrive 15 minutes early so we can show you around.
Warm up with the group. Nothing technical. You’ll move, get a little warm and settle into the room.
The coach demonstrates one thing, breaks it down, and you practise it slowly with a partner.
Drills let you practise responding while moving, with the coach guiding the exercise.
Bring the heart rate down. If you want to continue, we’ll explain the options. If you want to think about it, that’s fine too.
Your first step is a beginner-suitable class.
You won’t be asked to jump into advanced sparring.
WHERE A BEGINNER STARTS
The beginner programme: eighteen weeks, twenty-two techniques and a structured foundation.
Beginners and experienced members train in the same room. Learn alongside helpful training partners.
Advanced, Sparring and Combatives as you progress. She Fights Back is available for women who prefer a women-only class.
WHAT YOU GET OUT OF IT
Practise responses to grabs and threats, plus awareness, decision-making and getting away.

Krav Maga Israel Black Belt and Level 3 Coach, known for practical coaching, mentorship and calm leadership.
Coach Ben is a Krav Maga Israel Black Belt and Level 3 Coach who has trained directly under KMDI founder Ron Engelman since arriving in Australia in 2014, earning his Black Belt in 2024.
His coaching is grounded in 16 years of military service, where he rose to the rank of Lieutenant Commander in the U.S. Navy and completed multiple deployments across Africa and the Middle East. His experience spanned maritime security; Visit, Board, Search and Seizure operations (VBSS); operations-centre supervision; and multinational coordination in support of U.S. embassies. Most applicable to his role as a Krav Maga coach, Ben served as a VBSS Boarding Officer and Non-Lethal Weapons Instructor aboard the guided-missile cruiser USS Chosin, where he certified all shipboard security personnel in non-lethal tactics and reasonable use of force before deployment to Iraq.
Since 2015, Ben has built a career in private security, specialising in security risk management, security systems engineering, and Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design. He also spent a year working frontline security at a prominent Sydney venue, where he became known for remaining calm under pressure, repeatedly de-escalating confrontations and helping reduce physical assaults.
Ben teaches adults from complete beginners through to advanced students, children from three years old, teens, instructors, security personnel and women-only programs. His specialist areas include instructor development, anti-bullying, trauma-informed training and reasonable use of force. He has led self-defence workshops for as many as 215 participants at one time.
His wider martial arts background includes Kenpo Karate competition as a teenager, followed by boxing, Karate and Taekwondo at the U.S. Air Force Academy. Outside Krav Maga, he continues to train Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, wrestling, boxing and Muay Thai.
More than anything, Ben is known for his mentorship, practical wisdom and ability to develop capable, resilient people—not simply better fighters.

Ryan is a Level 1 instructor who began training alongside his wife, Tegan, in 2023 after attending one of Ron Engelman’s workshops. A lifelong believer in the lessons sport teaches—discipline, teamwork, commitment and character—he found that Krav Maga challenged him physically while building confidence in every area of his life. Ryan loves that on the mats, everyone is equal: whether it’s Day 1 or Day 10,001, every student is welcomed, respected and encouraged. As an instructor, he takes genuine pride in helping others discover their strength and watching their confidence grow. His advice? Make today your Day 1—not “one day.”

Known on the mats as “Hollywood,” Shahmar has a huge, dynamic presence: always laughing, experimenting and making training fun. An assistant chef by trade, he’s also handy with knives—mostly when vegetables are involved. His philosophy is simple: keep moving, explore your options and flow rather than freeze.

BEFORE YOU BOOK
Not at all. Your coach will already know this is your first class and will contact you beforehand to answer any questions. When you arrive, they’ll show you around, explain how the class works and help you through the basics. Nobody expects you to know anything on day one.
You don’t need to get fit before you start. Work at your own pace, take breaks when you need them and let your coach know how you’re finding it. The trial is a chance to experience the training and build from where you are today.
No physical training is completely risk-free, but every class is controlled and carefully coached. You’ll work with partners who are safe to train with, and everybody supports everybody. KMDI is a genuinely supportive community, so you can learn at your own pace and speak with your coach if anything feels uncomfortable.
The aim is getting home safely: reading a situation, avoiding conflict and getting away. Krav Maga was developed in a military context and adapted for civilian self-defence. For civilians, we teach aggression as reasonable, proportionate and controlled—and only as a last resort when it is needed to create safety and escape.
There is paid parking around the gym, often on Chalmers Street. City parking can be challenging, especially at busy times, so allow extra time and still plan to arrive 15 minutes before class.
Wear comfortable gym clothes you can move in and a T-shirt or other top with sleeves. No tank tops or singlets. Most people train barefoot, although wrestling or boxing shoes are suitable. Bring a towel and water, and arrive 15 minutes early so we can show you around.
Nothing for your first class. We sometimes use boxing gloves; if they’re needed for your trial, you can borrow a pair. If you join, you’ll need your own boxing gloves, a mouthguard and, for males, a groin guard.
Each fortnight focuses on one of four themes: stand-up striking fundamentals (Combatives); weapon defences; defences against chokes, grabs and holds; or ground combatives. We prefer to stay on our feet, but if a self-defence situation goes to the ground, the priority is to solve the immediate problem and get back up. We train for violent assaults rather than sport competition, balancing realism with safety and fun.
Krav Maga borrows heavily from boxing, wrestling, Muay Thai and BJJ. Combat sports prepare you to win under agreed rules against a matched opponent, with a referee. Real violence offers none of those controls: attackers may have size, weapons, numbers, surprise or the environment on their side. Our goal is not to win a contest; it is to get ourselves and our loved ones home safely while avoiding unnecessary force and lasting legal consequences.
Yes. Book the same session and have each person complete their own booking.
